A 300-year old pub with original features and offering comfortable surroundings without recourse to trendy fixtures and fittings. In the bar area the original flag stones are still on the floor and on the walls oak panels fitted by the local woodcarver as well as a bar that bears his name still takes pride of place. With a roaring fire alight in the inglenook fireplace in winter and an outside courtyard for summer dining the pub oozes atmosphere.
With three different dining areas within the pub, families and couples are catered for simultaneously. A private dining area and sitting room for parties up to sixteen offers a comfortable yet smart additional dining option; or alternatively The Tasting Room for up to 25 or The Ox Barn for events from 25-85.
The Durham Ox embraces the principle of good food in relaxed surroundings and has always endeavoured to use the freshest and best of ingredients, bought locally wherever possible. The menu is particularly celebrated locally for its local meat and game, fresh fish and seafood dishes.
The A La Carte Menu changes seasonally regularly to incorporate fresh produce and is available 7 days a week, except Sunday lunch. The menu is complemented by a range of ‘blackboard’ specials. Sundays provide a much talked about Sunday Lunch; the traditional Sirloin Beef and Yorkshire puddings, as well as fresh fish and other dishes, are complemented by delicious desserts. Booking is advisable.
We offer a Gluten Free and Vegetarian Menu as well as a children’s menu. All dietary requirements are catered for but please inform The Durham Ox in advance. The five cottages are converted farm buildings, while The Studio Suite has its own access and balcony above the pub. The four Junior cottages offer a double room (Superking or King) with en-suite facilities, snug seating area, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities and L’Occitane products. In addition the large cottage is spread over two floors with two large bedrooms, one superking and one twin, relaxed sitting room and a galley kitchen with honesty bar & fridge. We are pet-friendly in all the cottages.
The Studio suite is located above the pub and offers spacious luxury accommodation for two adults with 600sq feet of space, a super king bed, en-suite bathroom, sofas, flat screen television, kitchen and honesty bar & fridge. We’re sorry but this is the only room we don’t accept pets.
We offer 5* Visit Britain accommodation and award winning breakfasts for up to 14 guests at the pub.
Ivy Cottage, our self-catering 3 bedroom cottage 2 minutes’ walk from The Ox offers a rural bolthole for up to six guests. with spacious downstairs open plan traditional sitting room with open-fire (logs and coal provided) to a modern light filled kitchen which opens onto a small garden to the rear of the property. 2 doubles, 1 twin; 1 family bathroom, 1 ensuite shower room; downstair wc; garden, shed, landline and wif FOC. Dog friendly. Great access to walks and cycle routes as well as a convenient base for a huge number of local attractions.
All our rooms are individually designed whether the renovated farm cottages or The Studio Suite within the main Ox building. These are generous, comfortable relaxed spaces offering country style chic in a rural setting.
