Redcar is a seaside town on the Yorkshire Coast in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire. It is located 7 miles east of Middlesbrough.
The Teesside built-up area’s Redcar subdivision had a population of 37,073 at the last census.
It gained a town charter in 1922, from then until 1968 it was governed by the municipal borough of Redcar. Since the abolition of County Borough of Teesside, which existed from 1968 until 1974, the town has been unparished.
Redcar has a racecourse, where flat turf horse racing takes place.

What does Redcar Mean?
Redcar means “(place by the) red marsh” from the Old English read “red” and Old Scandinavian kjarr. However the first part of the name could also represent OE hreod, (reed), giving a sense “reedy marshland”, referring to the low lying land by the sea on which Redcar lies – there’s a similar place name over in the Yorkshire Dales, where there is a village called Redmire which means a similar thing, albeit in that case reeds by an inland marsh.
