The pretty town of Selby is dominated by the superb Abbey, founded in AD1069. Having stood for almost 1,000 years, the Abbey is a testament to endurance during some of England’s most destructive periods in history. Magnificent both inside and out, this holy site was once destroyed by fire then rebuilt by hand, and now resides at the heart of community life (holding regular services and concerts) for this charming Yorkshire town.

Pennine Trails, paintballing and pubs!

Walkers and cyclists will love the scenery around Selby, in particular the Trans Pennine Trail cycleway with its direct path into the heart of York.

If you’re looking for some adrenaline-pumping action, why not take your chances against The Predator (yes, really!).

Selby Town Hall is regarded as one of the best live venues in the area, having won the Yorkshire Post’s ‘Nightlife Award’. Expect local band nights, big crowds and the annual Battle of the Bands which has been known to sell out in a matter of hours!

Flying the flag for America

History buffs will enjoy a visit to the Abbey where you can see the Washington Window – a stained glass window featuring the heraldic arms of the ancestors of George Washington, and often cited as an influence for America’s Stars and Stripes flag. Not to be missed!
